After a summer and fall, the Sunshine is still bright and energetic enabling us all to see more clearly now that the rain is gone. To my loyal listeners and to all newcomers, Knocturnal Sunshine resumes but not without a story attached. Well...maybe not a story but an explanation, and far from an excuse. The facilitator of this podcast lost one of his best friends of ten years this past July by the hands of St. Louis County Police. This incident was devastating to say the least and tragic to make it more plain. Yours truly has since been in deep reflection about life, death and the deeper meaning of it all,thus void of inspiration to do a number of things, including making a mix for you to listen to. Even though I'm far from over it, I am slowly starting to reemerge and sort of smile again. I don't mention this to bum anyone out,only to offer a glimpse as to my absence or hiatus from the cyberscene. So please forgive me, although this isn't really an apology. This mix is a bit different than what you may be used to in the way of beatmatching and blending,but still flows together nonetheless. I reached back into the 90's and grabbed Wyclef in a bubblegoose and I was feeling free enough to snag Soul II Soul while there. I went the Wrong Way with Georgia and got lost in translation while listenin to Train. All was well though because I got it all together after resolving my Love Issue cuz I too am a Master Teacher, like Erykah. I stay woke. While still soarin off of the abyssyllabic pair of mixes from days past, I was reminded (by myself) that of all of the genres that I DIG, Jazz has been my first and longest running true love. We've been acquainted since the early 70's fusion and contemporary styles kept folks groovin, in an unpretentious sorta way. Acts like Ronnie Laws and super vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson made it possible for the Tom Brownes and Nathan Haines to simultaneously groove with free tunes that don't follow mainstream guidelines, and don't fly over your head in rigidity or obscurity. My new love... is Broken Beat, new school acidic jazz with drum patterns that challenge the standards. DKD and Shuya Okino demonstrate eclecticism with ease. So after the one of the hottest concerts I'd ever been to had concluded (N.E.R.D. at the Pageant), I knew that this Sunshine ep had to reflect the depths of my collection and to prove once and for all that I'm not a Neo-Soul deejay, or a sock hop deejay, or a smooth one. I am in fact, a nerd, geek and addict for groove no matter where it comes from. Exemplified by such fine acts as Jay-Z(just in case you thought I wouldn't, I will), N.E.R.D.(for Kenny Kinds), Bilal(screaming obscenities with pops and skips) and the ever-gritty sound of Sharon Jones.
